Nandu’s debut ton puts Guyana in command on Day 2 – WI Championship

Guyana Harpy Eagles’ young debutant opener Matthew Nandu stroked a rock-solid century to mark his entry into regional four-day cricket and put his team in charge at stumps on day 2 of their first round encounter with defending champions Barbados Pride.

Resuming with their side on 205/5, Nandu and Kevin Sinclair added a further 20 runs to their partnership before the latter fell 7 runs short of a half-century edging Jair McAllister to stand-in skipper and wicket-keeper Shamarh Brooks.

Veteran Veerasammy Permaul joined Nandu and together they put on a 90-run 7th-wicket partnership to flatten the Barbados Pride bowling unit. Nandu’s century was brought up just before lunch with a savage cut off the bowling of Keon Harding.

Shortly after lunch, the partnership was broken as Permaul now on the offensive, holed out to McAllister to give Keon Harding what would be his only wicket of the innings. Now in his 8th partnership, Nandu and fellow debutant Shamar Joseph further frustrated the Bajans and added 39 before Nandu’s marathon knock came to an end with the total at 354. The youngster’s 126 spanned 331 deliveries, and included 14 boundaries.

His wicket reinvigorated the Barbados Pride bowlers and they wrapped up the remaining two wickets for just 17 runs but Nandu had already done the damage.

In reply, Barbados openers Zachary McCaskie and Sheyne Moseley put on a valuable 69 run opening stand. However McCaskie would be the first wicket to fall, holing out to Chandrapaul Hemraj off the bowling of spinner Kevin Sinclair.

Jonathan Drakes followed quickly, trapped LBW to Permaul for duck. Moseley would push on to register a dogged 65 before he made his way back to the pavilion giving Shamar Joseph his first wicket at this level, he was out caught behind.

At stumps, Barbados Pride were105/3, still 266 runs adrift of the Harpy Eagles first innings total.

Guyana Harpy Eagles Practice Match: Sinclair’s all-round brilliance hands Imlach’s XI big win!

After a quiet 1st innings with both bat and ball, all-rounder Kevin Sinclair produced the goods (74 & 4/54) to help the Tevin Imlach XI to a 143-run victory over Gudakesh Motie’s XI.

Resuming day 3 on 167/4, Imlach’s XI lost a further 2 wickets quickly before Sinclair entered the fray and together with Akshaya Persaud, the duo put on an 88-run partnership before the latter fell for 31. Sinclair followed shortly for a well played 74, from there, wickets tumbled cheaply and Imlach XI were eventually all out for 300.

Needing a challenging 310 to win, Motie’s XI never quite got going with Anthony Bramble providing the only spark of resistance with a well-played 55 while opener Rampertab Ramnauth got a start (35) but couldn’t kick on. Sinclair along with Anthony Adams (4/25) ran through the batting line-up as the Motie XI could only muster up 167 before being bowled out, 143 runs behind the required target.

WI’s Hetmyer & McCoy out with injuries, Sinclair & Hosein in for 4th & 5th CGI T20s

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel has announced the 14-member squad for the fourth and fifth matches of the CG Insurance T20 International (T20I) Series against Australia. The matches will be played under lights at the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium (DSCG) on Wednesday, July 14 and Friday, July 16 with the first ball at 7:30pm (6:30pm Jamaica Time).

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein and off-spinner Kevin Sinclair have been named in the match-day squad as replacements for Shimron Hetmyer and Obed McCoy – who have minor injuries.

West Indies have an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match CG Insurance Series. West Indies clinched the Series with a six-wicket victory on Monday night, after a superb win by 18 runs last Friday night followed by an impressive 56-run triumph on Saturday night.

If Evin Lewis is fit again he could have a chance of replacing Andre Fletcher. They could also pick an extra spinner in Sinclair as both Allen and Walsh turn the ball away from right-handers, and Australia have two left-hand batters in the top seven.

Windies looking to be consistent against Sri Lanka – Sinclair

When the West Indies head into battle against Sri Lanka at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday evening in the first of three T20 Internationals, they will be aiming to be consistent in winning games and ultimately the series.This is according to new boy Kevin Sinclair, the young Guyanese right arm off-spinner who is in the team for the first time.

Fresh off a disappointing loss in the CG Insurance Super50 Cup against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, the youngster is looking to rebound in the series against the Sri Lankans.

Reflecting on his first time selection, Sinclair told The 592 Dugout; “I feel good, I feel really good about being selected to represent the West Indies. I must say I have made my family proud, especially my grandfather. I know the struggle and the time that he put in to train me every day and even in the nights over the years. I have made him proud and that’s all I’ll continue to do”.

Looking ahead to the series, he maintained; “I feel confident heading into my first series. It’s a different environment than I’m accustomed to obviously, I’m looking forward to it, I’ll do my best. The guys here are confident in terms of winning the series. Coach (Phil) Simmons has been beating something into our head; we should start winning cricket games. We have to understand what we need to do in order to win games, how we have to go about winning, that we should be consistent for long periods of time in order to win. So that’s our mindset heading into this series.”

The series opener this evening will be the first men’s T20 International at the Coolidge Cricket Ground and with relatively short straight boundaries it could turn out to be a high-scoring contest. Back in West Indies colours is the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle, who is making a comeback to the side. Also making a comeback after years is fast bowler Fidel Edwards. Both were members of the West Indies team which won the T20 World Cup back in 2012, when they beat Sri Lanka in the final in Colombo.

Johnson’s XI beats Hetmyer’s XI by 2 wickets in 1st Jaguars practice match

In the first practice match which was played at the LBI ground on Monday (January 18), Johnson’s XI won the toss and inserted Hetmyer’s XI to bat. In a match which was initially reduced to 45 overs due to drizzles during the morning hours, Hetmyer’s XI reached 83 for 6 off 23.3 overs when rain actually put a temporary halt to play. On resumption the overs were revised based on time remaining, with Hetmyer’s XI having 11.3 more overs to bat in the match which was further revised to 35 overs a side.

Akshaya Persaud made an entertaining unbeaten 51, inclusive of 2 sixes and 3 fours, to propel his team to 152 all out off 33.3 of their allotted overs. Ricardo Adams supported well with a quickfire 47, in which he slammed 5 sixes and 1 four. The only other batsman to reach double figure was Vishual Singh with 15.

Bowling for Johnson’s XI, West Indies fast bowler Romario Shepherd grabbed 4 for 24 from 5.3 overs, while talented fast bowler Nial Smith claimed 3 for 22 from 6 overs. Gudakesk Motie and Ramaal Lewis took 1 for 26 from 6 overs and 1 for 22 from 7 overs respectively.

In reply. Johnson’s XI under the DLS 4 system required 143 for victory. Jonathan Foo was full of confidence, blazing 35, a knock which included 4 sixes, and one in which he helped to catapult his team’s score to a winning position, with team mates Tevin Imlach and Romario Shepherd contributing valuable
scores of 28 and 15 respectively, allowing for Ramaal Lewis and Gudakesk Motie to complete their team’s winning innings unbeaten on 7 and 3 respectively, as Johnson’s XI reach 145 for 8 from 30 of their allotted 35 overs.

Earlier, opening Trevon Griffith contributed 19, inclusive of 2 fours. Bowling for
Hetmyer’s, XI, Steven Sankar took 4 for 39 from 7 overs, Antony Adams 2 for 12 from 4 overs and Kevin Sinclair 2 for 20 from 7 overs. Leon Johnson’s XI won by 2 wickets.

The next practice matches are scheduled for Wednesday (January 20), and Friday (January, 22) at the LBI facility.
