CWI name 17-man squad for Pak series, No Hetty No Permaul

Cricket West Indies have named a 17-man squad for the upcoming two-test series against Pakistan, however, Guyanese batsman Shimron Hetmyer and spin maestro Veerasammy Permaul have once again been omitted from the side.

Permaul’s absence is notable since he picked up a 5-wicket haul in the recently concluded ‘Best vs Best’ 4-day match while Jomel Warrican who continues to feature in the test side has not had any standout performances which warrants his continued selection.

The panel have recalled fast bowler Chemar Holder and middle-order batsman Shamarh Brooks. Holder made his Test debut in New Zealand last year but has not featured since then. Brooks last played in New Zealand and has earned a recall following a polished century in the Best v Best four-day match last week. Additionally, two experienced players, left-hander Darren Bravo and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel will not feature in the upcoming two-match series.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector of the Senior Men’s Team said:

“Chemar Holder returns, having recovered from his injury. He will bolster the fast bowling department. Shamarh Brooks batted his way into the provisional squad by scoring an accomplished century. He will certainly add some depth to the squad’s batting.”

“Shannon Gabriel has been given time to rehab fully and build his conditioning, so he was not part of the preparations for the Test series against Pakistan, which included the Best v Best game. Darren Bravo has been part of the ‘bubble’ from the preparation camp leading into the Betway Test series against South Africa and has been given a break.”
Harper added:

“I expect the team to be highly competitive in every department while playing with passion, purpose and determination. I look forward to the batsmen stepping up as they did in the series against Bangladesh and against Sri Lanka earlier this year in Antigua.”

The two-match Betway Test Series will be played at Sabina Park from August 12-16 and August 20-24. The Betway Test Series forms the first of six Series in the new cycle of the International Cricket Council World Test Championship to find the best Test match cricket team in the world.

WI’s Hetmyer & McCoy out with injuries, Sinclair & Hosein in for 4th & 5th CGI T20s

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel has announced the 14-member squad for the fourth and fifth matches of the CG Insurance T20 International (T20I) Series against Australia. The matches will be played under lights at the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium (DSCG) on Wednesday, July 14 and Friday, July 16 with the first ball at 7:30pm (6:30pm Jamaica Time).

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein and off-spinner Kevin Sinclair have been named in the match-day squad as replacements for Shimron Hetmyer and Obed McCoy – who have minor injuries.

West Indies have an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match CG Insurance Series. West Indies clinched the Series with a six-wicket victory on Monday night, after a superb win by 18 runs last Friday night followed by an impressive 56-run triumph on Saturday night.

If Evin Lewis is fit again he could have a chance of replacing Andre Fletcher. They could also pick an extra spinner in Sinclair as both Allen and Walsh turn the ball away from right-handers, and Australia have two left-hand batters in the top seven.
West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Andre Fletcher/Evin Lewis, 3 Chris Gayle, 4 Nicholas Pooran (capt & wk), 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Fabian Allen, 8 Hayden Walsh Jr, 9 Oshane Thomas, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Kevin Sinclair

Ben McDermott and Ashton Agar missed the third game with minor injuries. A decision on their availability will be taken shortly before the match. With the series gone there could be a chance to look at some of the other bowling options.
Australia (possible): 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Alex Carey, 5 Moises Henrqiues, 6 Ashton Turner, 7 Dan Christian, 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Riley Meredith, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood

Hetmyer recalled as WI name 15-man squad for ODI series vs Australia

Guyana’s Shimron Hetmyer has been recalled to the fold as Cricket West Indies today named a 15-member squad for the three-match One Day International (ODI) Series against Australia. Also included in the squad is all-rounder Romario Shepherd.

The squad features most of the players from the 3-0 clean sweep over Sri Lanka in the CG Insurance ODI Series earlier this year.

There are recalls for experienced left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell and Roston Chase, the right-handed all-rounder.

The CG Insurance ODI Series will be played at Kensington Oval in Barbados on July 20, 22 and 24 with all three matches scheduled as day/night encounters. First ball is 2:30pm (1:30pm Jamaica Time). There is great anticipation as this is Australia’s first tour of the West Indies since the tri-nation series back in 2016.

The series forms part of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) ODI Super League where both teams are aiming to win points to be one of the top seven teams that will secure automatic qualification for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

Roger Harper, Lead Selector said:

“This squad is coming off a comprehensive series win against Sri Lanka which should boost their confidence going into what is expected to be a tougher contest against Australia. The return of Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase and Sheldon Cottrell adds greater depth and experience to the squad.”
He added:

“Playing in familiar home conditions, hopefully will bring out the best in each player thereby enabling the team to perform at a consistently high standard. This CG Insurance ODI series against Australia is part of the ICC Cricket World Cup qualification process where every game and every point counts, so it is very important.”

Pooran to lead Guyana Amazon Warriors for CPL 2021

Nicholas Pooran has been named as the new captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors ahead of the CPL 2021 season. The dashing ‘keeper-batsman will take over the reins from Chris Green, who has been released by the franchise. Along with Pooran, the Warriors have retained a total of 11 players from last year’s squad including the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Imran Tahir and Naveen Ul Haq. The big missing name is Mujeeb ur Rahman – the leading wicket-taker in 2020 with 16 wickets has been ignored.

Meanwhile, Andre Russell, who had a bittersweet relationship with the Tallawahs last year where he even indicated about leaving the team at the end of the tournament, will surprisingly stay with Jamaica along with fellow local stars – Carlos Brathwaite, Rovman Powell, Chadwick Walton, Fidel Edwards and promising youngster in Ryan Persaud being the seventh player to be retained by the franchise.

Two-time champions Barbados Tridents have retained skipper Jason Holder despite enduring a tough 2020 campaign where they lost 7 games and failed to qualify for the semis. Apart from Holder, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Raymon Reifer, Justin Greaves, Nyeem Young, Joshua Bishop, Johnson Charles and Hayden Walsh Jr are the others to have been given the contract extension.

Defending Champions Trinbago Knight Riders have parted ways with veteran Dwayne Bravo with the all-rounder being traded to St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots. They’ve got back Denesh Ramdin in return and overall have managed to retain the majority of the team which won them the trophy last year. Kieron Pollard will remain captain while the leading run-scorer of the previous season, Lendl Simmons, who amassed 356 runs in 11 games last season, will continue to represent the Knight Riders, in addition to other big names like Colin Munro, Sunil Narine, Darren Bravo, Sikandar Raza and Khary Pierre.

Another team that had a forgettable competition in 2020 was St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. The franchise was severely handicapped due to the absence of stars owing to Covid-19. They could muster just one win in 10 games and bagged the wooden spoon. However, the inclusion of seasoned campaigner Dwayne Bravo from TKR will be a shot in the arm for the Patriots. They have also successfully traded Sherfane Rutherford from Guyana in their bid to strengthen the batting.

The runners-up St Lucia Zouks will see a new skipper in this upcoming edition of CPL as Daren Sammy announced his decision to quit captaincy to assume the role of consultant and Brand Ambassador for the Zouks. Other prominent names to feature in the retained list are Andre Fletcher, Kesrick Williams, Rahkeem Cornwall and Roston Chase, who was the top run-getter for the franchise. But they have let go of the Afghanistan spin duo of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan. The reason behind this move being their busy International schedule. (Story from Cricbuzz)
